A Grand Design
Viscount Paul de la Panouse was keen to enhance his collection of live pythons, scorpions and bats housed beneath his château at Peaugres Safari Park in the Ardeches Mountains.
This called for a grand design uniting the creative talents of patron, architect and maze designer. It opened in 1994.
We created a new terrace in front of the château complete with an 'infinity pool', with the lip of the pool peeling away as the crest of a waterfall.
The waterfall cascades over a rugged rock façade into a deep ravine.
Visitors approach from below by crossing a footbridge across the ravine, and passing dry through the waterfall, which separates in two without getting them wet.

Dragon-themed Maze
Beneath the terrace, they enter an extended basement containing a pool of live crocodiles; the only way forward is across a glass-sided bridge over the crocodile pool.
Finally visitors enter the mirror maze, decorated in the style of an Egyptian Temple after the Great Labyrinth of Ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphs and vibrant Egyptian colours adorn the pillars.
Tanks Of Live Fish
Tanks of aquarium fish appear all around.
At one point, a crash of breaking glass is following by the sudden apparition of the front half of a crocodile on the maze floor, while his hind legs still seem to be within the crocodile pool!
