"When I first met Adrian Fisher, I have to say that it was with a fair degree of scepticism. There I was being told how fantastic mirror mazes were, and how they would really enhance both Merlin's "Dungeon" brand and visitor experience. How many presentations have I sat through over the years that have promised that?"
However there was something in that ever so "mad professor" way that it was presented, that made us at Merlin sit up and listen; if the end product could have some of the passion and enthusiasm from the sales pitch, it couldn't be all bad.
We commissioned the first maze for our newest Dungeon in the famous Speicherstadt, in Hamburg, Germany, in December 2003. The plan was to launch by Whitsun, which gave us a very short lead time to plan, agree and install ready for launch. The team on both sides gelled well and all of the many issues that arose were solved quickly and successfully. We launched on time, on budget and most importantly the experience exceeded our expectation. Before long the Mirror maze or "Das Labyrinth der Verlorenen", was seen as one of the top three or four highlights to the visit.
With this success behind us, it was not a difficult decision to commission two more mazes for the Edinburgh Dungeon and the world famous London Dungeon. Both were successfully installed for Easter 2005 and have shared the success of Hamburg.
In London visitors are sent into 'The Labyrinth of the Lost' where we quite literally scare the pants off them with a combination of live acting, mechanical scares and the amazing effect of a room that seems
to go to infinity. Typical visitor quotes included: "The maze is incredible, really dark and ghostly", "I lost my brother it was great!", "The labyrinth scared me stiff; you didn't know which way to turn."
Edinburgh follows the story of the little Drummer boy who was lost in the castle catacombs over a century ago, vainly looking for a way out. If you lose your way you may follow the same fate!
Working with Adrian and his team has been a great success for both parties, with Merlin adding significantly to its Dungeon visitor experiences with added twist, and Adrian Fisher allowing a little more of his maverick mind to come to life.
